About StageDoor

StageDoor is the champion of Johannesburg theatre: the place to find out what's on, what's worth your evening, and why.

Think of it as the friend who's already seen it. We stand at the stage door, alongside the audience and the performers, and our aim is simple: get more people into more seats, and give every reader something worth thinking about.

What we cover

Plays, musicals, comedy, dance, children's theatre and one-person shows across Johannesburg and Pretoria, with the occasional festival special and a few surprises along the way.

What a StageDoor review is

A personal reflection on an evening at the theatre: what the story is, how it's told, what it stirs up, and why it matters beyond the stage. If a show doesn't work for us, we'd rather spend the words on one that does, so being covered here means it's worth someone's evening.

Who's behind it

StageDoor was founded and is edited by Barry Morisse, who began it years ago as a WhatsApp theatre club in Johannesburg, and has been writing about the city's stages ever since.
